Online betting operator fined record $586,000 for offering punters inducements to gamble
Playup Interactive, which trades as Draftstars, was fined $586,000 in Downing Centre Local Court on Monday 12 August following an investigation by Liquor & Gaming NSW, which found 33 illegal advertisements on its website.
The company was found guilty on all 33 counts of publishing advertisements which included inducements to participate, or to participate frequently, in gambling activity – as well as an inducement to open a betting account, which is an offence in NSW.
Liquor & Gaming NSW Director Compliance & Enforcement Dimitri Argeres said online betting operators were well aware of the legislation in NSW on offering inducements.
“NSW bans the advertisement of any offer of an inducement to participate in a gambling activity, including an inducement to bet more frequently, to persons who do not hold a betting account with the betting operator,” Mr Argeres said.
“Wagering operators like PlayUp Interactive are able to legally advertise their products in a variety of ways, but they can’t advertise or promote inducements such as offers of increased odds or bonus bets to entice people to open a betting account.
“It is the responsibility of the betting service provider to ensure prohibited gambling advertising is not published or communicated in NSW.
“Liquor and Gaming NSW will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to these offences, and this sentence shows that strong penalties can apply.”
In NSW it is prohibited to offer any inducements to open betting accounts, refer friends to open betting accounts, keep a betting account open or consent to receive gambling advertising.
A maximum penalty of $110,000 applies to any corporation and $11,000 for individuals who publish prohibited gambling advertising.

Betsson Group Accredited with the Latest Version of ISO 27001
Betsson Group has transitioned from the ISO 27001:2013 certification to the ISO 27001:2022 certification, following a confirmation by the British Assessment Bureau (BAB), an internationally recognised body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) – the sole body appointed by the UK Government to provide accreditation to certification bodies in the UK. This milestone highlights Betsson’s systematic approach to protecting sensitive information, including customer data, employee details, intellectual property, financial information and third-party data.
Betsson Group obtained the ISO 27001:2022 certification by ISO, the International Organisation for Standardisation in December 2024, replacing the ISO 27001:2013 certification, first obtained in 2019 and consistently maintained it in the successive years.
The ISO 27001 standard supports companies with guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system. Meeting this standard means that a business has a solid plan to manage risks related to data security owned or handled by the company and that this system respects all the best practices and principles enshrined in the standard. The ISO 27001:2022 builds on the ISO 27001:2013 version with minor tweaks to some clauses, Annex updates and the addition of new controls. It also refreshes some terminology and definitions to stay in sync with the latest industry standards.
With cyber-crime and new threats on the rise as well as the fast pace of technology advancements , the adoption of ISO 27001 as a standard equips businesses like Betsson Group with a tried and tested security framework which help it become more risk-aware and be in a better position to proactively identify and address weaknesses, whilst striving to continually improve its secure posture.
ISO 27001 certification is also highly respected by regulators and licensing authorities, streamlining Betsson Group’s processes for acquiring new gaming licenses while reinforcing trust and credibility with stakeholders.

KSA Imposes Fine on Winning Poker Network for Unlicensed Gaming
Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA)has fined illegal operator Winning Poker Network (WPN) €1,275,000. WPN allowed Dutch players without the necessary permit, which is prohibited.
Dutch players could go to the website americascardroom.eu to gamble illegally. The KSA then informed WPN that it intended to impose a penalty payment order, after which it would no longer be possible to play on the website. WPN owns several (illegal in the Netherlands) websites, including truepoker.eu. This website remained available to Dutch people, after which the KSA still imposed a penalty payment order on WPN, stating that it would stop offering the website on all its sites.
KSA Chair Michel Groothuizen said: “A penalty payment order is an effective way to quickly take illegal supply off the air. However, these types of parties should not think that they will get off easy with this, so we also impose fines for the violation committed. In doing so, we hit them where it really hurts, namely in their wallets.”
In addition to imposing a penalty payment, the KSA can also impose sanctions for the period in which the illegal offer was available. This is also the case here. The imposed fine was increased due to so-called aggravating circumstances: practices that aggravate the seriousness of the offence. For example, WPN charged players extra costs if they had not logged in for a long time (inactivity costs) and it pretended to be a reliable party by brandishing a foreign licence. The KSA takes this type of consumer fraud very seriously.
