Detroit Casinos Report $101.6M in September Revenue

The three Detroit casinos reported $101.6 million in monthly aggregate revenue for the month of September 2023, of which $100 million was generated from table games and slots, and $1.6 million from retail sports betting.

The September market shares were:

·        MGM, 44%

·        MotorCity, 31%

Table Games and Slot Revenue and Taxes

September 2023 table games and slot revenue decreased 0.8% when compared to September 2022 results. September monthly revenue was 4.4% lower than August 2023. From January 1 through Sept. 30, the Detroit casinos’ table games and slots revenue increased by 0.6% compared to the same period last year.

The casinos’ monthly gaming revenue results were mixed compared to September 2022:

·        Hollywood Casino at Greektown, up 15.1% to $24.3 million

·        MGM, down 7.6% to $44.7 million

·        MotorCity, down 1.1% to $31 million

During September, the three Detroit casinos paid $8.1 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan. They paid $8.2 million for the same month last year.

The casinos reported submitting $12.3 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit in September.

Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

The three Detroit casinos reported $18.1 million in total retail sports betting handle, and total gross receipts were $1.6 million.

Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) were down by 39.4% compared to September 2022. September QAGR was up by $1.3 million compared to August 2023.

·        MotorCity: $875,616

During September, the casinos paid $59,533 in gaming taxes to the state and reported submitting $72,763 in wagering taxes to the City of Detroit based on retail sports betting revenue.

Fantasy Contests

For August, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $1.3 million and paid taxes of $110,903.

From January 1 through Aug. 31, fantasy contest operators reported $14.7 million in aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues and paid $1.2 million in taxes.

Detroit Casinos Report $123.86M in March Revenue

The three Detroit casinos reported $123.86 million in monthly aggregate revenue (AGR) for the month of March 2024, of which $122.26 million was generated from table games and slots, and $1.6 million from retail sports betting.

The March market shares were:

  • MGM, 46%
  • MotorCity, 31%
  • Hollywood Casino at Greektown, 23%

Monthly Table Games, Slot Revenue, and Taxes

March 2024 table games and slot revenue increased 3.8% when compared to March 2023 revenue. March’s monthly revenue was 16.7% higher than February 2024. From Jan. 1 through March 31, the Detroit casinos’ table games and slots revenue decreased by 1.6% compared to the same period last year.

The casinos’ monthly gaming revenue results were mixed compared to March 2023:

  • MotorCity, up 7.2% to $38.35 million
  • Hollywood Casino at Greektown, down 1.4% to $27.26 million

In March 2024, the three Detroit casinos paid $9.9 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan. They paid $9.5 million for the same month last year. The casinos also reported submitting $14.5 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit in March.

Monthly Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

The three Detroit casinos reported $17.25 million in total retail sports betting handle, and total gross receipts were $1.61 million for the month of March. Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) in March were up by 13.2% when compared to the same month last year. Compared to February 2024, March QAGR was up by $1.7 million.

March QAGR by casino was:

  • MGM: $327,857
  • MotorCity: $538,988
  • Hollywood Casino at Greektown: $731,389

During March, the casinos paid $60,413 in gaming taxes to the state and reported submitting $73,838 in wagering taxes to the City of Detroit based on their retail sports betting revenue.

Fantasy Contests

For February 2024, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $405,342 and paid taxes of $34,049.

The three Detroit casinos reported $104.63 million in monthly aggregate revenue (AGR) for the month of February 2024, of which $104.76 million was generated from table games and slots, and negative ($124,853) from retail sports betting.

February 2024 table games and slot revenue decreased 0.2% when compared to February 2023 revenue. February’s monthly revenue was 11.6% higher than January 2024. From Jan. 1 through Feb. 29, the Detroit casinos’ table games and slots revenue decreased by 4.7% compared to the same period last year.

The casinos’ monthly gaming revenue results were mixed compared to February 2023:

MGM, down 1.6% to $49.29 million

Hollywood Casino at Greektown, up 0.6% to $23.83 million

In February 2024, the three Detroit casinos paid $8.49 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan. They paid $8.51 million for the same month last year. The casinos also reported submitting $12.5 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit in February.

Monthly Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

The three Detroit casinos reported $13.2 million in total retail sports betting handle, and total gross receipts were negative ($120,142) for the month of February. Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) in February were down by $583,605 when compared to the same month last year. Compared to January 2024, February QAGR was down by $625,073.

During February, the casinos paid $4901 in gaming taxes to the state, compared to $17,341 for the same period last year, and reported submitting $5991 in wagering taxes to the City of Detroit based on their retail sports betting revenue.

The three Detroit casinos reported $94.4 million in monthly aggregate revenue (AGR) for the month of January 2024, of which $93.9 million was generated from table games and slots, and $500,221 from retail sports betting.

The January market shares were:

January 2024 table games and slot revenue decreased 9.1% when compared to January 2023 revenue. January’s monthly revenue was also 15.7% lower than December 2023. From Jan. 1 through Jan. 31, the Detroit casinos’ table games and slots revenue decreased by 9.1% compared to the same period last year.

The casinos’ monthly gaming revenue results were all lower compared to January 2023:

In January 2024, the three Detroit casinos paid $7.6 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan. They paid $8.4 million for the same month last year. The casinos also reported submitting $11.2 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit in January.

Monthly Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

The three Detroit casinos reported $24.2 million in total retail sports betting handle, and total gross receipts were $520,988 for the month of January. Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) in January were up by $389,197 when compared to the same month last year. Compared to December 2023, January QAGR was down by $4.3 million.

January QAGR by casino was:

  • MGM: $403,926
  • MotorCity: $1.1 million
  • Hollywood Casino at Greektown: negative ($1.0 million)

During January, the casinos paid $58,073 in gaming taxes to the state, compared to $4197 for the same period last year, and reported submitting $70,978 in wagering taxes to the City of Detroit based on their retail sports betting revenue.

Fantasy Contests

For December 2023, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $484,140 and paid taxes of $40,668.

From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2023, fantasy contest operators reported $21.8 million in aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues and paid $1.8 million in taxes.
