As the World’s First Metaverse Employer, Decentral Games Is Defining the Future of Work

Published

on

Few periods in history have altered the general public’s perception with regard to the future of work more profoundly than the last eighteen months.

After spending considerable time in isolation, perhaps it’s no wonder workers across the world have emerged from the pandemic having re-evaluated their professional passions, workplace preferences, and outlook for the future of their careers. Coincidentally, this once in a lifetime macroeconomic event has coincided with a key inflection point in the worlds of cryptocurrency and blockchain. For the first time in history, workers have been afforded the unique opportunity to pursue gainful employment in the most futuristic workplace known to humankind – the metaverse.

Decentral Games proudly bears the honor of becoming the world’s first metaverse employer. It’s an important and necessary responsibility we believe will bring a new wave of adoption and sense of community not only to our platform, but to the industry at large. As we’ve continued to scale headcount over the last year, our thesis for investing in new talent and helping to define the future of work has only grown stronger.

Despite having established careers prior to joining Decentral Games, new employees who join our ranks express feeling a call to become part of something bigger. “The job I had at the time was ten years in the making, an amazing place to work, and I wanted to leave it with every part of me…” Murphjestic, Decentral Games’ Community Manager recalls of leaving his Big 4 Accounting role. “I loved that job, so it wasn’t a matter of being unhappy with my employer. I had fallen in love with crypto, the metaverse, the potential and the amazing communities that were being forged.”

Screen Shot 2021-07-27 at 11.23.17 PM...It’s a story we never get tired of hearing. Despite varying backgrounds, we’ve found motivated, adventure-seeking individuals at every turn who have felt driven to bring their collective decades of experience to Decentral Games without looking back. DG’s Events Manager, Adam for example, brings 20 years of entertainment industry experience to the table, and after traveling the world playing clubs as a DJ he found himself ready to apply these skills in a totally new capacity. “I started DJing in Florida, then playing clubs on the east coast of America and most recently playing venues all over South East Asia and landing in Italy.” he says. “I joined the Decentral Games team to provide versatile mixes, on board a dozen DJs, and grow high profile entertainment events.”
undefined“I won’t lie, it was scary enough to give up a stable IRL job for a job I didn’t know if it would be for the future..” Casino Host Aeron says. “Now after more than five months I can say that this job is all I wanted and even more!”

It’s often the case that technological innovations come with a counterintuitive tradeoff, that despite being more connected than ever, the human element of community and working towards a common purpose is lost. As a team, we quickly realized that gaming and socializing in the metaverse was going to be an unfamiliar feeling for most – at least at first – so connecting with new users from the start and making them feel welcome was proving to be an especially important task. “The original idea was to have someone charismatic greet new users and play games with them so they aren’t alone.” GLHF (Kris), DG’s Casino Manager remembers. “That quickly blossomed into an elite, full-blown support system of 20+ Casino Host team members, most of which are working 8+ hour daily shifts, and can now answer almost any question and resolve issues for users, on the spot.”

Most employees see immediate gratification and fulfillment in the work they’re performing due to their rapport-building with our customers, many of whom are awestruck navigating the metaverse for the very first time. “It reminds me how important it is to onboard complete strangers…” Casino Host, 100Rainbows said. “While a waiter will meet/greet patrons and aid them with the menu, a Decentral Games Host can help newcomers to walk/talk and teleport within the metaverse.”

These initial interactions additionally present an opportunity to introduce players to Decentral Games’ play-to-earn model, a unique system that allows both players and employees to acquire shared ownership in the platform the more they interact with it. Players place wagers and earn rewards via our proprietary $DG token, an asset simultaneously represents both a unit of account and fractional ownership. Through the $DG DAO, $DG token holders own the casino, control the profits, vote on new games and decide on feature proposals. The system allows customers to “be the house” and financially aligns the interests of our employees with our players, fostering a stronger sense of community not seen in the traditional gaming sector.

Aside from the nature of their work, DG metaverse employees see the upside of completely remote work, a team-oriented environment, flexible hours, and opportunities to develop cutting-edge skills. “I can pick the hours that won’t affect my school work and also allow me to not miss any time with friends and family and that is something I’m extremely grateful for,” Ethan, a Casino Host says of his schedule. “In fact, I can work more than double the hours at DG than I’d be able to work elsewhere all from the comfort of my home.”

Above all, what keeps our talent executing day in and day out on Decentral Games’ bold vision for the future is the belief in limitless opportunity and potential. The world of cryptocurrency today is filled with genuine excitement, a feeling that is deeply reminiscent of the internet boom that captivated the world’s imagination in the early 2000’s. Similarly, before they made the leap to get involved, many of our employees were just crypto-enthusiasts looking to get a foot in the door of this game-changing industry. As the industry has evolved to support the immersive infrastructure of the metaverse, the new ecosystem has rapidly matured to the point of being considered the future frontier of work. Even amid the uncertainty of price fluctuations in crypto markets and short-term market uncertainty, the team is filled with conviction that cryptocurrency has the potential to ring in a brighter future for all who wish to participate in it. “The strange part is describing my work to people, it’s always a ‘Shut up, no way!’ moment if they are young or simply a confused look for people my parents age, Denzel, a Casino Host, says. “Nonetheless it turns heads and opens people’s eyes to the possibilities being created by blockchain technology.”

Building Beyond Trends: Tom Horn Gaming on What Really Drives Slot Success

Published

building-beyond-trends:-tom-horn-gaming-on-what-really-drives-slot-success

“The studios that last are those willing to experiment and try new things, while staying grounded in their core principles. It’s easy to follow trends, but what really matters is understanding players, trusting your instincts, and consistently delivering quality.”

As the iGaming industry continues to evolve, the pressure to innovate has never been greater. True success, however, goes beyond simply following the latest trends.

Ahead of the HIPTHER Prague Summit, where Tom Horn Gaming will take the stage as Grand Sponsor, our CEO, Ondrej Lapides, shares his perspective on what it really takes to build games that stand the test of time.

In this exclusive interview with Hipther, we explore how Tom Horn Gaming approaches product development, from balancing innovation with familiarity to designing games that resonate across diverse player segments and markets. The conversation also touches on the growing importance of player-centric design, long-term engagement, and the industry shifts shaping slot development in 2026 and beyond.

As Central and Eastern Europe gain increasing relevance in the global iGaming landscape, the Prague Summit provides a timely platform to exchange ideas, share insights, and look ahead at what’s next for the industry.

Tom Horn Gaming has been in the industry long enough to see trends come and go. From your perspective, what really separates studios that stand the test of time from those that simply chase what’s popular?

In my view, longevity in this industry comes down to balance and a genuine belief in what you do. The studios that last are those willing to experiment and try new things, while staying grounded in their core principles. It’s easy to follow trends, but what really matters is understanding players, trusting your instincts, and consistently delivering quality. When you combine creativity with discipline and a long-term mindset, you create products that resonate well beyond the latest industry buzz.

Your portfolio balances recognisable slot formats with proprietary mechanics like QuickX™. How do you decide when to innovate and when to refine what already works?

It’s always a mix of data, experience, and intuition. Innovation is important, but it should never come at the expense of clarity or player enjoyment. Sometimes the right move is to take something that already works and refine it further. At other times, the market clearly shows that players are ready for something new. Finding that balance is partly analytical and partly instinctive, built over time through a deep understanding of how players engage with games.

Your games often combine modern mechanics with very recognisable slot DNA. Why do you think familiarity still plays such a strong role in player engagement today?

Player expectations vary a lot across markets and segments. Some players prefer classic slot gameplay that feels instantly familiar, while others are looking for something more experimental. Our role is to cater to both by offering a diverse portfolio. Familiarity makes games accessible and comfortable, while modern mechanics bring fresh excitement and new layers of engagement.

Player attention spans are getting shorter, yet expectations around engagement and excitement keep rising. How do you approach game design to make titles instantly accessible without sacrificing depth?

It really comes down to putting more thought and effort into the design process. We dedicate significant resources to balancing gameplay so the core experience is easy to understand from the first spin, while sustaining engagement over time.  Achieving that balance requires close collaboration among designers, mathematicians, and product teams to make sure the experience feels both intuitive and rewarding.

Looking at your recent releases, there’s a clear focus on replayability rather than one-off novelty. How important is long-term player value when developing new games?

Long-term engagement is very important, but again, it’s about balance. Not every game is built with the same objective in mind. Some are designed to deliver quick excitement, while others aim for longer sessions. A strong portfolio needs both. The key is making sure each game delivers real value and keeps players coming back.

From your perspective as a slot supplier, which innovations do you believe will genuinely shape slot development in 2026 and beyond, and which current trends are unlikely to last?

We’re already seeing a growing demand for more layered gameplay and richer feature sets, and I expect that to continue. Players are looking for more dynamic experiences rather than purely static mechanics. At the same time, fast-paced formats like crash games have gained strong traction and are influencing expectations around immediacy and interaction. That said, not every trend will last. In the end, the games that succeed will be those that combine innovation with strong fundamentals and a clear understanding of player preferences across different markets.

Your recent partnerships significantly extend distribution across Europe and Latin America while reinforcing compliance-focused delivery. How can aggregation partnerships contribute to sustainable scaling across different regulated markets?

Scaling across regulated markets requires the right partnerships and strong technical foundations. For this to work properly, the technical integration needs to be robust, seamless, and fully aligned with regulatory requirements. When that connection is well implemented and continuously optimised, it allows content to reach operators quickly while maintaining the reliability and compliance that these markets demand.

As Grand Stage Sponsor of the HIPTHER Prague Summit, what message or mindset would you like operators, partners, and industry leaders to take away from your presence at the event?

Events like the Prague Summit are particularly valuable because they put a spotlight on Central and Eastern Europe, a region that is playing an increasingly important role in the global iGaming landscape but doesn’t always get the same attention as larger markets.

For us, the real value lies in knowledge exchange. It’s an opportunity to discuss the latest developments, share insights from real operations, and compare experiences across different jurisdictions. Bringing these perspectives together helps the industry learn from one another and take away practical insights that can support future growth and innovation.

Movers and Shakers – The Velocity of Value: Why Burst Games are the New Acquisition and Retention Engine for 2026

movers-and-shakers-–-the-velocity-of-value:-why-burst-games-are-the-new-acquisition-and-retention-engine-for-2026

“Movers and Shakers” is a dynamic monthly column dedicated to exploring the latest trends, developments, and influential voices in the iGaming industry. Powered by GameOn and supported by HIPTHER, this op-ed series delves into the key players, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes shaping the future of online gaming. Each month, industry experts offer their insights and perspectives, providing readers with in-depth analysis and thought-provoking commentary on what’s driving the iGaming world forward. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to the scene, “Movers and Shakers” is your go-to source for staying ahead in the rapidly evolving iGaming landscape.

Gray Wagner, CEO at The Fortune Engine, says that as the boredom threshold of modern players hits an all-time high, Burst Games are emerging as the essential tool for operators to capture attention and keep it.

Traditional slot games, while still a vital component to any online casino lobby, are facing a demographic “cliff”. Why? Because younger, mobile-first audiences have a lower tolerance for long animations and “dead spins”.

The “boredom threshold” of modern igaming has led to a shift from a “session” economy to a “moment” economy where players demand an instant feedback loop from the games they play. Retention is no longer about how long a player stays, but how many action points they hit per minute.

While Burst Games maximise these action points, some operators I speak to are unsure what we actually mean by Burst Games, let alone how they can turbo charge acquisition and retention in the new “action” economy they find themselves competing in.

Defining the Category: What are Burst Games?

Burst Games are more than just mini-games – they are a distinct, high-performance vertical in their own right. Designed to be snackable, they provide short, snappy rounds (often under 10 seconds) that fit into the “interstitial moments” of a player’s day.

They are physics-based and lean heavily on arcade mechanics. Unlike the abstract math of a slot, Burst Games often use familiar “real world” physics making them intuitive and fair in the eyes of the player.

For example, Drop the Boss uses a drop mechanic where the main character tumbles down the gameboard, collecting Prizes and Multipliers along the way, before hitting a “Landing Zone” to determine the final round Multiplier.

This makes them incredibly intuitive and easy to learn – with no complex paytable to study and decipher, the barrier to bet is virtually zero.

Why Your Casino Lobby Needs Burst Games:

Burst Games are all about driving acquisition and retention. This is how their core game feature boost ROI and operational KPIs:

Attract the Non-Gambler – Burst Games bridge the gap between social gaming and iGaming. They attract the video game generation who find 5×3 reel slots repetitive and more “hardcore” casino games like roulette a little too intimidating.

The Sticky Loop – Because rounds are fast, the “just one more” factor is significantly higher than in traditional verticals. This creates a nice, sticky loop of longer session times and repeat play.

Fresh Experience for Veterans – Burst Games are the perfect “palate cleansers” between high-volatility slot sessions to reduce player fatigue and “churn out”. Veteran players are also often looking for new, easy to learn game formats.

Overcoming the “Volume” Objection:

Some of the operators we speak to already understand the Burst format and how it can help them acquire and retain players, especially those lucrative but hard to reach Millennial and Gen Z demographics. But they do show concern that there aren’t enough of these games yet.

At The Fortune Engine, we are working hard to build out a portfolio of titles from a small selection of studios, including Mirror Image Gaming, but this current lack of volume should not stand in the way of operators embracing the format.

In an era of 5,000+ slot titles, volume has actually become noise. Operators don’t necessarily need “more” games, they need higher-performing ones that actually stand out and can be heard by players.

Then there’s the halo effect. One standout Burst Game like Royal Drop can act as a lighthouse, pulling players into the platform who then explore the rest of the ecosystem. There really is a first-mover advantage to be had here but it’s closing fast.

Forward-thinking operators and brands like Stake already offer a small number of Burst Games to their players and are fast becoming known as the go-to destinations for these titles.

It also goes without saying that The Fortune Engine is committed to building out the Burst Game category at a pace that ensures a steady flow of titles for our operator partners.

Future Proofing Without Heavy Technical Lifting:

When considering any new game category, operators rightfully want reassurance as to the ease at which they can integrate said content. This is why The Fortune Engine has made it easy for operators to plug and play Burst Games without overhauling their UI.

Come July 2026, Operators can take a suite of Burst Games from The Fortune Engine ready to fill the new content category. This suite includes a series of proven burst game mechanics including, ‘Drop’ and ‘Vertical’ games, where characters collect prizes and interact with entire worlds with hidden mini games. Content like never before seen in igaming ready for audiences globally.

While volume is relatively low today, the velocity of development in this category is high. And this makes being “Burst ready” a competitive advantage.

The First-Mover Advantage is Now:

The iGaming landscape of 2026 isn’t defined by who has the largest library, but by who has the most relevant one. As player attention spans continue to compress, the “volume objection” rapidly fades in the face of superior engagement metrics.

At The Fortune Engine, we aren’t just adding titles to a list, we are engineering a new vertical designed for the high-velocity player. By integrating Burst Games now, operators aren’t just filling a gap in their portfolio, they’re future-proofing their platform against the demographic shift already underway.

The “action economy” is here. The question is no longer whether you have enough games, but whether you have the right ones to capture the next generation of play. It’s time to stop counting titles and start measuring momentum.

The Latin-American Esports Institute (ILAE) was established following a General Assembly held on 6 March 2026 in Rio de Janeiro. The organisation was founded with the stated goal of promoting competitive integrity, legal safety, and institutional research within the esports sector.

Carlos GamaVice President of Games and Esports at the Rio de Janeiro branch of the Association of Brazilian Information Technology Companies (ASSESPRO) and President of the Advisory Council of FERJEE (Rio de Janeiro Esports Federation, involved with the upcoming IEM Rio) was elected as Executive President to lead a multidisciplinary team tasked with developing frameworks for the industry’s regional growth.

One of the primary objectives of the ILAE is the creation of a local Esports Arbitration Chamber. This mechanism is intended to serve as a specialized venue for the mediation and resolution of conflicts, such as contractual disputes between players and organisations. The model aims to offer a technical alternative to the traditional judicial system, seeking to provide greater legal security and faster resolutions for administrative and professional disagreements within the competitive environment.

The ILAE’s structure is centered on an Executive Board that includes:

  • Vice-President Marcella Ferreira (former pro player and current sports psychologist),
  • Administrative-Financial Director Vinicius Verly (FERJEE), and
  • Project Director Marianna Muniz (FERJEE and OnFire Agency).

Technical oversight is managed by lawyers:

  • Dr. Antonio Carlos Bratefixe (Research and Knowledge) and
  • Dr. Osmar Berardo, who will direct the institute’s Arbitration Chamber.

The Fiscal Council is led by: Dr. Soraya Vasconcelos, who also leads Brazilian organisation Galorys, responsible for financial and institutional oversight.

Regarding the institute’s mission, Carlos Gama stated that the organization intends to facilitate dialogue across the Latin American esports community. “We want to bring together athletes, teams, researchers, organizations, companies, and public managers to build a common development agenda for the region,” Gama noted. He also highlighted that a priority for the ILAE will be the production of research on strategic themes, such as social inclusion and competitive integrity policies.

The ILAE’s governance framework also incorporates individuals with competitive backgrounds, aiming to ensure the organisation remains informed by the practicalities of the sector. This includes the participation of former FPS and eFootball pros Marcela “Callax”Renato “Rentão”Monik BisoniGabriela Tavas, and Gabriel “Franja” within the various councils and administrative chairs.

By integrating these perspectives alongside legal and academic professionals, the institute intends to address the specific needs of the regional ecosystem. The organization has opened associations to professionals, researchers, and entities.
