Kochi Comic Con makes grand debut in Kerala, draws over 20,000 footfall across landmark weekend
Kochi Comic Con, presented by Maruti Suzuki Arena and powered by Crunchyroll, concluded its inaugural edition at AICC Angamaly, Ernakulam, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of over 20,000 attendees across two days. This marks the first-ever Comic Con to be hosted in Kerala, reflecting the state’s strong reading culture, growing anime communities, and vibrant fandoms.
From February 28, fans of all ages—families, students, creators, and long-standing fandom groups—immersed themselves in artist alleys, panel discussions, gaming arenas, and live stage performances. Attendees enjoyed interactions with internationally acclaimed comic creator Dan Parent, who conducted sessions on storytelling, character creation, and global comic traditions, resonating with audiences familiar with both Malayalam comics and international pop culture.
The Creators’ Corner was a highlight, with established publishers such as Amar Chitra Katha, Balarama Comics, and Alpha Book Publishers, alongside independent creators like Abhijeet Kini, connecting directly with fans through signings and interactive discussions.
“Kerala has always had a strong artistic culture, visible in Kathakali, Theyyam, Koodiyattam, and mural traditions,” said Shefali Johnson, CEO, Comic Con India. “Cosplayers approached their craft seriously, audiences engaged thoughtfully during panels, and the overall warmth made this debut incredibly special for us.”
Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and MD, NODWIN Gaming, added:
“People in Kerala show up wholeheartedly for what they believe in. That same energy carried into Kochi Comic Con. In our very first year here, fans cheered for local favourites like MHR and Joker, attended every session, and explored every zone with real enthusiasm.”
Cosplay Highlights:
Cosplayers brought an impressive range of characters to life, from global favorites such as Denji (Chainsaw Man), Luffy (One Piece), Tanjiro (Demon Slayer), Dr. Strange, Moon Knight, Izuku Midoriya, and Bakugo Katsuki (My Hero Academia), to regional icons including Mayavi, Luttappi, and Minnal Murali. The Kochi Qualifier of the Indian Championship of Cosplay concluded with Indrakshi Haldar, cosplaying as Neverend, True Destiny King from Duel Masters, winning the title and ₹50,000 cash prize.
Gaming and Interactive Experiences:
The NODWIN Gaming Arena featured live gameplay, competitive challenges, VR experiences such as Chandrayan and Best Saber, racing simulators by Logitech, and a Just Dance booth, keeping attendees engaged throughout both days. Maruti Suzuki Arena and Crunchyroll experience zones attracted anime enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike, with exclusive perks for Crunchyroll Power Pass holders, including the immersive Suzume Door installation.
Main Stage Entertainment:
Musical performances from MHR & Joker energized the crowd with interactive singalongs, while Sreenath Bhasi & Crew drew a strong local response. Comedy sets from Gautham Govindan, Nirmal Pillai, Pilot Gomma, and Rohan Joshi, alongside pop-culture acts like Geek Fruit and Purple Line, rounded out the weekend’s entertainment offerings.
Kochi Comic Con’s inaugural edition successfully brought together comic readers, anime fans, gamers, cosplayers, and families, demonstrating that Kerala’s fandom culture balances nostalgia with a global outlook. With strong attendance and enthusiastic engagement, Kochi has firmly established itself on India’s pop-culture calendar, setting the stage for even larger celebrations in the coming years.

Mitrabha Guha qualifies for Esports Nations Cup 2026 Chess alongside Nihal Sarin
Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha has secured India’s second Chess slot for the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) 2026 after topping the regional qualifier, completing the country’s two-player contingent alongside Grandmaster Nihal Sarin. The ENC 2026 Finals are set for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Chess scheduled from November 2 to 8, 2026.
ENC 2026 Chess will feature 128 players competing for a USD 600,000 (~INR 5.7 crore) prize pool. The format starts with a round-robin group stage across 16 groups of eight players, before 64 players advance to a single-elimination playoff bracket, culminating in the final on November 8.
According to the release, 64 of the 128 players received direct invitations via the official Champions Chess Tour (CCT) rankings, with representation spanning 64 countries and territories. Confirmed names include Magnus Carlsen, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Alireza Firouzja and Hikaru Nakamura. The field also includes Alexandra Kosteniuk and Mai Narva, described as the first women to officially qualify for the event. A further 61 players qualified through Chess.com-operated regional qualifiers, with three wildcard slots rounding out the field.
India’s second slot was determined through the Middle East, India, and Central Asia pathway, which began with an open nine-round Swiss event for verified titled players under a 10+0 rapid time control, followed by a double-elimination bracket. Guha finished the Swiss stage as the only unbeaten player (six wins, three draws), then defeated Syria’s Malek Koniahli and Iran’s Artin Ashraf in the upper bracket to clinch qualification.
Speaking about his qualification, Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha said, “The regional qualifier was challenging from start to finish. Chess has become an increasingly important part of the global esports ecosystem, and the Esports Nations Cup is a great reflection of that growth. The tournament will bring together some of the strongest players from around the world, so preparation will be key. Over the coming months, my focus will be on refining different aspects of my game and ensuring I am ready to perform at my highest level when the competition begins”
Beyond Chess, NODWIN Gaming, identified as India’s National Team Partner for ENC 2026, has announced national team rosters for DOTA 2, MOBA Legends: 5v5! and Rocket League, with regional qualifier windows listed as June 29-July 1 (DOTA 2), August 15-16 (MOBA Legends: 5v5!, if India misses a direct invite), and July 17-19 (Rocket League).

S8UL gaming creator and streamer Payal Dhare has partnered with OWND!, the Gen Z-focused fashion brand from Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, to launch a gaming-inspired fashion capsule called ‘Gamer Drop’. The companies describe it as India’s first female gamer-curated capsule. The collection will be available on OWND!’s website and in the brand’s stores across India.
According to the press release, ‘Gamer Drop’ includes menswear and womenswear pieces built around gaming culture and streetwear, positioned as a creator-led collection rather than conventional creator merchandise. Marco Agnolin, Chief Executive Officer, OWND!. said, “We see gaming today as a powerful cultural force that is shaping how young consumers express themselves, communicate, and engage with fashion. As one of India’s biggest gamers, Payal Dhare represents this new generation perfectly through her authenticity, confidence, and deep connection with the gaming community. The release also points to India’s expanding creator economy. Citing a Boston Consulting Group report, it says India has nearly 2 to 2.5 million creators, with more than 60% of consumers exposed to creator-led content and over 30% of shoppers influenced by creators in purchase decisions.
