  • New Follow Player feature lets fans track their favourite basketball and ice hockey players with real-time notifications, including NBA and NHL

  • The NBA competition page received over 1.1 billion opens last season alone, demonstrating the market appetite for more detailed match statistics fans want to access

  • This follows the launch of the platform across football in September, activated by 1.3 million fans so far

Flashscore, the world’s most popular live scores and sports news app, has expanded its Follow Player functionality to basketball and ice hockey, allowing users to get real-time updates on their favourite basketball and ice hockey stars in the NBA, NHL and other leagues.

The launch follows the success of the feature for global football fans, launched in September. Within two months of being launched, 1.3 million fans are actively using Follow Player for football, averaging five players each, resulting in around 6.5 million player favourites.

The enhancement allows Flashscore’s 100 million-plus monthly users to add up to 100 of their favourite players to receive personalised notifications. Updates include alerts on whether a player is in the starting lineup, their in-game stats like goals and assists, and post-match performance ratings.

The expansion comes as Flashscore data reveals huge user engagement with the NBA and NHL during the 2024-25 season. In the last NBA season, there were more than 1.1 billion match detail opens across 1,316 games, with an average of around 320,000 users per match.

The most-followed team was the Los Angeles Lakers, attracting an average of 515,000 users to their games. In ice hockey and the NHL, last season saw more than 783 million match detail opens across 1,420 games. The Washington Capitals were the most popular team, with an average of 390,000 users per game.

Company data shows basketball and ice hockey are among the most popular sports with Flashscore users, beyond only football and tennis.

Tomáš Pondělík, Chief Product Officer at Flashscore, said: “Following the hugely successful launch of Follow Player for our football fans, expansion to Basketball and Ice Hockey is the next logical step. Fandom is evolving, and we’re seeing a significant shift from fans, especially with the younger generation, following only their favourite teams to a deeper interest in individual players. We see the same trend in basketball and hockey, where superstars often have a global following that transcends team loyalties. Being able to offer our users the chance to follow real-time updates from their favourite football, basketball and ice hockey stars sets Flashscore apart from other live scores apps.

“Our community has been asking for this feature, and the data shows a clear appetite for in-depth information. With Follow Player now available for basketball and ice hockey, fans can track their heroes in real time with the fast, non-intrusive notifications they expect from us. We’re already working on adding more meaningful player data to give fans a richer understanding of performance, and this is just the beginning.”

Flashscore rolls out new player rating system developed with Petr Cech

Flashscore has launched an updated player performance metric, Flashscore Rating, developed with input from former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Prague-headquartered live scores platform said the new system is designed to deliver a more detailed, role-based assessment of players during matches.

According to Flashscore, Flashscore Rating combines more than 70 statistics into a single grade and weighs events beyond goals and assists, including “big chances created” and “errors leading to goals.” The company said the model also accounts for role-specific strengths such as duel dominance and dribbling, to avoid comparing players against irrelevant attacking metrics.

The rating updates continuously as matches unfold, Flashscore said, and the underlying factors are surfaced in a new Player Card. Players must play at least 10 minutes to receive a rating. Flashscore said all players are graded across Goalkeeping, Defending, Progression, Playmaking and Attacking roles, or combinations of these.

Cech said: “The new Flashscore rating is not a journalist’s opinion – it’s a data algorithm. Once the system knows which role a player was active in, it builds a rating for that specific match.

“No more goalscorers getting inflated ratings for one moment, while a midfielder who runs the game gets a forgettable 6.8. The rating isn’t fixed at kick-off and it doesn’t just apply at full-time. It updates continuously as the match unfolds. Every bonus is listed on the Player Card, where you can see exactly why a player got their number. There is no black box.

“When I played, ratings felt arbitrary. Whether it was a 6.0 or a 7.0, you never really knew what moved the needle. However, the new Flashscore rating shows the workings, and that changes everything.”

Flashscore said the ratings launch is part of a broader set of product updates timed to coincide with the World Cup. New features include Follow News Notifications for team news alerts, an updated Momentum 1.5 match dynamics visualisation with added context and statistics, and FIFA rankings shown in match details and team profiles.

Flashscore has published findings from a survey of 2,000 UK sports fans, conducted with TGM Research, looking at viewing and betting habits ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the research, 86.8% of male fans and 81.6% of female fans among online sports audiences plan to follow the tournament “very” or “extremely” closely.

With time zone differences expected to push some kick-offs to around or after midnight UK time, the survey indicates stronger willingness to watch England late-night games live among younger fans. It found 41.5% of 18–34s say they will “definitely” watch England’s late-night matches live and 34.3% “probably” will. The figures fall to 35.0% (aged 35–54) and 30.1% (55+) for those saying they will “definitely” watch live.

On wagering, Flashscore said fans are prioritising in-game markets over standard match outcomes. It reported 64% of UK users placed “Both Teams to Score” (BTTS) bets and 59% placed “Over/Under” total goals wagers during the tracked period, compared with 49% who placed standard match outcome (1X2) bets.

Martin Matejka, Marketing Director of Flashscore, said: “The World Cup is one of the biggest events on the global sports calendar. Flashscore attracts highly engaged sports fans, and this audience closely overlaps with the betting market. Bettors need fast, reliable scores and statistics right at that moment, which is exactly what we deliver.

“Our survey shows that 46% of Flashscore users (the highest share among key market players) that have experience with other competitors have selected Flashscore as the fastest, proving that speed matters. This combination makes Flashscore a natural partner for betting platforms looking to connect with an active audience.”

Flashscore tops speed rankings in UK fan survey ahead of 2026 World Cup

Flashscore has been ranked the fastest sports results platform by UK fans, according to new research into how audiences consume live sport.

In the UK survey of 2,000 sports fans, 46% identified Flashscore as the quickest platform. Flashscore said the pattern was similar in Italy, where 49% of 2,000 respondents named Flashscore the fastest, and in Brazil, where 53% of 3,300 participants reached the same conclusion.

Respondents also associated Flashscore with reliability. In Italy, Flashscore (known locally as Diretta) was recognised as being more accurate than competitors and national broadcasters’ platforms, while in the UK and Brazil it was recognised as being equal to or close to competitors and national broadcasters’ platforms.

Flashscore Director of Engineering Tomáš Kavka said: “It is not one magic technology that solves everything, it is a lot of small and larger right decisions over time.

“Serving a user in South America from Europe is technically possible, but speed is in our DNA. If we want to be the fastest on every continent, we need to be as close as possible to the user. And the data needs to reach that location the moment it appears in our database.”

The company said it continues to scale globally in its 20th year since launch, reporting more than 125 million monthly users worldwide, more than 400 million app downloads across its portfolio, and approximately 145 billion monthly impressions. Flashscore also reported over four million UK downloads, more than two billion monthly impressions, and average daily time spent close to 30 minutes. On infrastructure, Flashscore said it moved to a new data centre in Prague in 2024, tripling processing capacity, and uses a distributed cloud architecture. It added that during a major Champions League matchday earlier this season it handled 34 million users in a day, delivered 700 million notifications, and processed up to 1.3 million requests per second.
