MGCB Partners with Gamban to Offer Free Gambling Blocking Licenses to Michigan Residents
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has announced a landmark partnership with Gamban, the world’s leading gambling blocking software, to offer free Gamban licenses to any Michigan resident who wishes to use the application. Residents may claim a free license, with options ranging from one to five years at no cost. The initiative represents a significant expansion of the MGCB’s responsible gaming framework, providing residents with a powerful, practical tool to support their efforts to limit or eliminate access to online gambling.
Gamban is a comprehensive blocking solution that restricts access to gambling websites and applications across all major devices and platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. Once installed, the software is designed to be highly resistant to removal, offering users a meaningful barrier between themselves and online gambling content even when willpower alone may not be enough.
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, approximately 2% of Americans — roughly six million people — meet the criteria for a gambling addiction. Michigan’s experience reflects this trend. As one of the first states to legalize online sports betting and online casino gaming, it has experienced significant growth in digital gambling activity. The MGCB recognizes that with expanded access comes a heightened responsibility to ensure robust consumer protections are in place.
“Michigan is committed to ensuring that the expansion of legal gaming comes with the strongest possible safeguards for our residents. Our partnership with Gamban gives anyone who wants help a free, proven tool to block access to online gambling — instantly and across all their devices,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said.
Under the partnership, Michigan residents can obtain a free Gamban license by visiting Michigan.gov/MGCB. The offer is open to all Michigan residents, with no requirement to be enrolled in a self-exclusion program. Those already enrolled in the MGCB’s Responsible Gaming Database or Disassociated Persons List are especially encouraged to take advantage of this additional layer of protection.
Matt Zarb-Cousin, Director of External Affairs at Gamban, said: “We are delighted to partner with the Michigan Gaming Control Board to make Gamban free for people where cost might otherwise be a barrier. When someone takes the first step toward quitting gambling, they will be made aware of all the services available in the state via the Gamban app, while it works to block gambling sites and apps in the background. This approach has improved overall rates of abstinence and recovery in other jurisdictions.”
Gamban blocks all online gambling content regardless of regulatory status — including casino games, sports betting, poker, slots, social casinos, crypto gambling, and NFT-based wagering — providing comprehensive coverage that extends beyond licensed Michigan operators to include unregulated and black market sites. The software is designed to minimize disruption to everyday digital activities, leaving investment platforms and unrelated websites unaffected.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board works hard to deliver meaningful, accessible responsible gaming support to residents across the state. Gamban helps people take back control, and this partnership ensures that anyone in Michigan who wants that help can get it — free of charge,” said Sandra Johnson, MGCB Responsible Gaming Section Manager.
This partnership reflects the MGCB’s broader responsible gaming strategy, which includes the Disassociated Persons List for Detroit’s commercial casinos, the Responsible Gaming Database for online self-exclusion, and the “Don’t Regret the Bet” awareness campaign. The addition of Gamban creates a layered approach to harm reduction — combining voluntary self-exclusion with device-level blocking technology to provide support at every point in a person’s journey.

Gamban is now available in Japanese, making it easier for Japanese speakers to access the blocking software and take steps towards a life free from gambling harm.
“With the help of designers based in Tokyo, we’ve created a dedicated website built to feel familiar for people in Japan. By tailoring the experience this way, we have made it easier for more users to navigate the website, understand Gamban and take their first step towards recovery,” the Company said.
“While Gamban was created to block gambling sites, we also want to provide as many people as possible with the right information, in the right language, at the right time.
“This update is part of our continuous aspiration to make Gamban accessible to as many people as possible, wherever they are and whatever language they speak. By offering Gamban in Japanese, we aim to remove barriers for those who may otherwise struggle to find the right tools to help them quit online gambling.”
Matt Zarb-Cousin, co-founder of Gamban, said: “We are committed to not only translating but also localising Gamban so it looks and feels familiar to people, wherever they might be. Our mission is not only to make blocking software as good as it can be, but also as accessible as possible.”
The Company added: “We’ve been fortunate to receive input and support from Japanese organisations such as The Society Concerned About Gambling Addiction, helping us ensure the translation is accurate, accessible, and culturally appropriate for users in Japan.”

Deputy Director of Responsible Gambling at Ohio Lottery Commission
Ohio Becomes First State to Provide Gambling-Blocking Software Free-of-Charge, in Partnership Between Time Out Ohio & Gamban
Time Out Ohio (TOO), which offers individuals the ability to ban themselves from both Ohio’s brick and mortar casinos / racinos, has teamed up with Gamban to offer state-wide access to software that blocks online gambling sites and apps across all of a person’s devices.
Ohio is the first state in the US to offer this kind of support and protection.
The partnership will see TOO provide effective aid for any individual looking to self-ban from gambling, free-of-charge. Individuals can sign up to Gamban alone if they just want to block online gambling, or they can use both TOO and Gamban together to ban all gambling including offline.
Jimmie Hicks, Deputy Director of Responsible Gambling at Ohio Lottery Commission said: “A Gamban one-year subscription is being offered at no cost to anyone looking for protection from mobile sports betting and other online gambling coupled with Time Out Ohio or as a stand alone protection.”
Gamban also works with FanDuel, Unibet, Bally’s and WagerScore in the US, giving those experiencing harm from gambling access to their software for free.
Gamban’s co-founder, Matt Zarb-Cousin, said:
“Time Out Ohio is a fantastic voluntary program that helps individuals who are at risk at a time when gambling harm is increasing. Our goal is to help people regain control and balance of their life, without compromising on the benefits of new technology. Through this partnership, they can do that.
“We hope other states will follow the lead of Ohio, which has been incredibly forward-thinking at a time when mobile sports betting across the US is growing rapidly.”
In the UK, Gamban works with the self-exclusion scheme GAMSTOP and the leading treatment provider GamCare to give those experiencing harm from gambling access to their software for free. Gamban is also available for free through Norsk Tipping in Norway and Veikkaus in Finland.
With the introduction of mobile sports betting in Ohio, the Ohio Lottery and Casino Control Commissions developed a fully online version of the Voluntary Exclusion Program, TimeOutOhio .com. Anyone wanting to be excluded from Ohio gambling sites may self-ban from their computers or mobile phones.
Players self-banning via TOO will be offered the opportunity to claim a fully paid for one year Gamban licence. Once the player signs up to and installs Gamban, it’s designed to be as difficult to remove as the various devices allow, while providing a balance between protection and intrusion.

Time2play.com and Gamban Join Forces to Reduce Gambling Harm
Time2play.com is a casino comparison site that genuinely prioritizes responsible gambling. Despite massive growth in the last 12 months, Time2play has kept its promise to put the player first. In a bid to set the standard for other iGaming companies, Time2play has now established a partnership with Gamban to support problem gamblers.
Gamban is an application that blocks all online gambling websites when installed on your device. Users are protected from thousands of gambling sites, apps, and services from the second the app is installed. Gamban will not deactivate your service until your subscription has ended, and it cannot be removed manually from your device during the same period.
This means that, even in the most difficult of times, Gamban keeps its subscribers protected. A Gamban subscription costs $35 per year, but the new initiative will see Time2play provide completely free Gamban subscriptions to those that have signed up using their website. Time2play will pay for the subscription for every user that needs it. There are alternatives, but Time2play considers Gamban one of the most effective responsible gambling tools on the market.
Time2play’s Co-Founder, Tim Tepass, said: “We wanted to do more to help any of our players that may be struggling with gambling addiction. Gamban was the obvious choice for us because of its reliable technology. Other tools are easily bypassed and don’t offer the same level of protection.”
Although a focus on reducing problem gambling isn’t something new for Time2play, it’s something that the business plans to push even further in 2022. This is in line with the growth of the US casino market and Time2play launching in other geographical locations.
“We can’t say that we are ‘for the user’ without considering the implications of our product on problem gamblers. While most of our visitors are casual players looking for information on a casino, some could be at higher risk of gambling addiction. We want to do everything we can to support those people, and this collaboration is just the beginning of our efforts,” said Tim.
Despite the industry’s stigma, Time2play is proof that online casino affiliates and responsible gambling can co-exist harmoniously. By collaborating, both can ensure that players have easy access to the available tools before they even begin gambling.
“It’s vital that players understand that there is support available if things get out of control. Affiliates are positioned to make people aware of these resources early on. Through better visibility and accessibility of these resources, Time2play can raise standards for affiliates in reducing gambling harm,” said Gamban’s Co-Founder, Jack Symons.
