Europol Forecasts Bigger Match-Fixing Risk Amid Covid-19

Europol has issued a warning of greater risk of match fixing on account of the Covid-19 pandemic in its latest report. The organization also predicts heightened involvement of organized crime groups in sports betting.

The report offers details about the link between sports corruption and organized crime on aspects such as the characteristics of criminal networks and their structure and their modus operandi. The report also reviews various methods of match-fixing.

The Europol puts the annual criminal proceeds from betting-related criminal activities at €120 million globally. Organized crime groups increasingly use online betting to manipulate sports competitions, especially at lower-level competitions of football and tennis.

Europol pledges its support, through its Economic and Financial Crime Centre (EFECC), to the investigations to expose criminal networks involved with global sports betting.
